2022 Three Peaks Race kit advice from inov-8
The Three Peaks Race is a demanding course often staged in tough conditions. Runners should be prepared for challenging mountain weather and thus ensure they have the best kit to tackle whatever is thrown their way.
Here at inov-8 we have worked with fell, trail and mountain runners over almost two decades in designing lightweight kit that meets all the needs for both racing and training.
The Three Peaks Race requires all runners to carry the following mandatory kit: Compass, map of the full route (minimum 1:50,000 scale), whistle, wind & waterproof jacket with hood, waterproof trousers (full body cover), hat, gloves and emergency food (chocolate bar, gel or similar). On top of this, runners will need to decide what shoes and clothes to wear, plus what form of bag/pack to use.
Here are our suggested kit choices for the 2022 Three Peaks Race:
Shoes – The new X-TALON ULTRA 260 V2 is the perfect shoe for this course. It has our iconic 8mm X-TALON rubber studs that grip tight in mud and ride smooth over harder trail, plus increased cushioning and a wider toe box fit – both of which are ideal for longer races like this.
Bag / Pack – If you want to carry your race kit in comfort and with hydration options easy to hand, then our RACE ULTRA PRO 5 VEST is the perfect pack. Softflasks can be carried on the front and there are multiple other pocket options. The back compartment comfortable holds all mandatory race kit plus more. If you prefer to use a bumbag, our RACE ELITE WAIST is a very popular choice amongst racers.
Waterproofs – Either go super light and fast with the RACESHELL and RACEPANT (combined weight of just 186g!) or go for more protective options in the form of the STORMSHELL and TRAILPANT. All these are also waterproof and windproof.
Hat & gloves – We have lots of choices in both ranges, all of which will keep you warm and protected on race day. Check out our gloves and hats.
Race kit – Depending on the weather conditions you may choose to go for shorts or tights, while up top many runners will wear their running club vests. Anyone looking to wear a tee instead of a vest, or a layer to go under their vest, should look at our short-sleeve and long-sleeve options.
See you on the start line!
